Pisa

January 11, 2012

Eating in Pisa is an experience all of its own. There are quaint dishes like Frog Soup and the White Beans of San Michele Soup. Fish figures largely here using grey mullet, cod, mediterranean spider fish, even sweet and sour cod. For a change from fish you can choose from the list of game such as pheasant, boar, or hare. The pesto pisano differs from the Genova because of the pine kernels.   The final course of your meal just has to be cake such as the Torta co’ bischeri. It’s made of chocolate, chestnuts and pine nuts and is simply delicious.

Shopping in Pisa – Pisa is one of the most visited cities in Italy due to its beautiful monuments but you have to content yourself with the local Pisa production, because there are very few local shops. Among the classical souvenir shops in Miracles’ square you can buy sweaters, hats,  t-shirts with the city coat of arms, the ancient Maritime Republic flags and leather accessories produced in that area. But among all these wonderful things the little statues of the tower, the baptistery and the church are the biggest sellers.

In Piazza delle vettovaglie in the middle of the centro storico you can buy local products, among them: pecorino, wines and groceries produced in the area. Every second week end of  the month the city holds an antique local street market in Via dei Mille, in Via Santa Maria and Piazza dei Cavalieri.  Keep your eyes open for a Pisa bargain.
